One very spoilt girl

As you may have gathered from James's post, I am a very lucky girl! Not only does he have a way with words (I really did blush reading his last post!) but he also treats me like a Princess. Any of my friends who have met him (or heard me prattle on about him) always ask where I found him or if he has any brothers – you know the answer to the first and he is the only boy in his family, which probably explains why he treats me so well!
Add to this the fact that James is just at little* competitive (*read incredibly), present times are always amazing! James has a way of finding/making the perfect present. Our first celebration together was Christmas in 2011. If you have met me before (or my mum) you will know that in our house we love Christmas! In fact, if I could get away with it I would have Christmas decorations up all year round!
We had only been seeing each other for a few months, but he arrived down a few days before the big day with a big shiny gift bag and separate plastic bag.
In that bag I found neon paper, pritt stick and scissors, which can mean only one thing for any Christmas lover... Paper chains! So we sat up and made those, opened presents and just generally had an amazing Christmasy evening with a blazing fire!
The beauties in action!

So as a very spoilt girl I have gotten used to joking with James that anytime he goes to the shop I'd like a surprise, a present and treats. So on the 2nd of November, James headed off to the shop and brought me back a chocolate bar and a Boost drink. More than happy with my treat and present I went off upstairs for a shower and knowing I wasn't heading anywhere for the day got into comfies for a lazy day at home!
What I didn't know was that James left the house on a secret mission! I settled myself down on the sofa assuming James had forgotten to get something for lunch. The next thing I knew James was at the door saying “you know how you got your present and a treat earlier? Would you like a Surprise?”
Well, of course I did! James pushed in a massive box wrapped up in Christmas paper! A big tag and bow sat on top. I actually said out loud “if this is a trick it has taken way too much effort!”

When I opened the top of the box, a giant Mickey Mouse balloon popped out! James shouted “You're...We're going to Disneyland!!!” This was one awesome very early Christmas present!
I'm not going to lie, I may have shed a tear…

James has secretly booked us a weekend to Disneyland Paris, and even better we were going in two weeks!

Little did I know he had even more secret plans on the go...

Evil Plans and stuff...

James's First Blog: Silence will fall...

Days since proposal: 9
Days Stuck to the diet: 180
Slices of Tardis cake consumed: 1 <--- My best Bridget Jones impression

Since the better half has already gone through how we met it’s up to me to continue the story.

We have underestimated the amount we have to cram into this post. Its only when you begin trying to write everything down do you realise how much you want to say. I was meant to bring this post the whole way through the engagement plans but it will have to be split up so all the important stuff gets enough attention.

The decision to ask Catherine to marry me was a simply one. She was literally put on this earth to complete me, and me her. That being said it is still a nerve wrecking experience. My only advice would be share the secret with a select few. I choose two, Nuala and Dinky.

Any whovian knows the line “Silence will fall when the question is asked” for everyone this is an amazing teaser tagline for Doctor Who, for me it resonated deep. The first person to be told of my plans was the now Bridesmaid Nuala. This was a blessing to me as I now had an outlet for my excitement, worry and sheer joy.

August 10th: Upstairs, Bogans Bar, Omagh. Catherine and I meet up with Nuala who has returned from London for a visit home. Catherine excuses herself from the table.

James – “Noodles... try and stay calm but... I’m going to ask Catherine to marry me...”
Noodles – “...” – (The silence I was referring too)
Noodles – “OH MY GOD... When? How? Where?... OH MY GOD”
James – “...” – (The silence once again)
Noodles – “Im so happy for you both this is amazing news OH MY GOD!”
From this point I have sworn her to secrecy and have unburdened my mind with the framework for my cunning future plans. Freeing my mind up for more excitement and yes more plans. The rest of that night I took great pleasure in seeing Nuala try and bottle her excitement and occasionally start beaming a massive smile at Catherine (none the Wiser).

August 29th: Corick House, Clogher, Dinkys Wedding. From the time I had told Nuala of my plans the dust had settled well except for the random text of joy and excitement from Nuala. I have just spent the last few months helping my mate get ready for his wedding, suits, chats to calm him down and the occasional slap to help him to wise up and chill out. (I enjoyed those the most) I waited as long as I could, I had to tell him about my plans, I needed someone on my side i.e. a groomsman. When the evening of his wedding was drawing to a close it was the time to tell him. Overjoyed was the reaction I got. Almost as if Leeanne his new wife had just said “Yes” to him all over again.

I was set. I had my support structure in place, I had found the geek girl of my dreams and I had the makings of a fairytale proposal. Only one hurdle left... The ring!!!!

Catherine is the kind of girl who doesn’t wear jewellery. Maybe an odd necklace if the occasion called for a bit of Geek Glam. Nevertheless this situation called for some deep thinking and sly out of the box deductions. So I did what any other red blooded geek would have done in my position.... I Googled it.

This proved for the first time in my Googling life unsuccessful. Here is a summary of what found if you are Geek in need of advice, it may work for you.

  1. Ask her, her ring size – (for me defeated the purpose of the secret proposal)
  2. Take a ring she owns and have it sized – (Catherine doesn’t wear rings)
  3. Get a confidant to ascertain the size – (Nuala lives in London)
  4. Guess!!! – (couldn’t take the chance of it not fitting)

NB at this stage I should point out that the ring is not the deal breaker here, one would hope that if she is going to say yes when you ask, with a ring that doesn’t fit even if you do not have one at all.

  1. Propose and go ring shopping after – (wouldn’t fit in with my plans)
  2. Get a cheap gumball ring the resizable one, keep it in your pocket and randomly “find” it on the ground and jokingly try it on her. Laugh it off with a “someday lol”. But keep the ring. Job done. – (this was my favourite and almost how I was going to do it. It screamed Wile-e Coyote and Dick Dastardly – Loved it)

For me in the end I deployed a move that bought me brownie points and help me succeed in my end goal. The hand massage technique. Simple but it works. The basics of the idea are to give your beloved hand massages. Using your thumb and finger to create a mould of her ring finger and place it on your own to find the best fit. Catherine’s’ ring finger being the same size of my little finger. This worked a treat until I realised I was measuring the wrong hand... So the process began again, remember left hand!!! – I may add it worked because we spent hours watching the previous 7 series of Doctor who in the run up to the 50th anniversary episode. Side note: it was Epic!!!

The Ring

One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them”

My quest to find the perfect ring was not too bad, all I can say on the matter is that it will choose you. Armed with the knowledge that Catherine's Mum, Rosemarie had a circular cut stone, I was resolute that Catherine would be happy with the same style. As Catherine and her mum have similar tastes. Some shopping around and some sneaky google searches later I had found the one. All I had to do was run it past someone to get the green light. My Mum. Shocked by the news she was delighted, almost giddy. I swear I could almost read her mind “Im going to have to get a whole new outfit”.

I might as well come clean, the ring was one of the last things I got organised. I was more concerned with the WHERE...

How it all began...

So after a few conversations with friends and family, James and I have decided to write a blog following our engagement and wedding preparations!

Catherine's First Blog; How we met...

Days since proposal: 5
Days Stuck to the diet: 0
Cream Buns eaten today: 1 <--- My best Bridget Jones impression

I guess I should probably begin with us…

If you were to ask any of our friends or family to describe us separately, you would probably get very similar replies. We are both geeks, with a massive love of all things Doctor.

We are incredibly relaxed, but insanely driven - which seems like a massive oxymoron but we get stuff done without making much of a fuss about it.
We are both quite creative,  James is insanely talented when it comes to DIY, Crafts, music, tech, well anything he really puts his mind too.
I am more of a creative when it comes to theory. I like trying out new ideas, whether that be starting a business, making my own costumes, or working with other creatives to help them make the most out of their ideas (I work for an awesome company called Taggled that lets video bloggers tag items within their videos).

We like to think we were always meant to meet. We both went to the same Irish Summer Camp - although he went the only year I didn't, we stayed in tents within meters of each other at Oxegen, and few other near meetings.

But the night we eventually met was the 29th of October 2011. For the astute among you might notice that this was the Saturday before Halloween… so of course there were costumes involved!

I had made my own Jessica Rabbit (from Who framed Rodger Rabbit) Costume, and James was the Joker form Batman. To be honest, James was one of the only people to recognise who I was supposed to be. It might have been the gin I had before leaving the house party I was at, or the time finally being right, but I went chasing after James. We had an instant connection.

Two days later (on Halloween!) we met again at a night club, again in full fancy dress. I had gone along with a friend to make sure he wasn't a pyscho, but I knew straight away he was something special.

So for our first two dates we actually didn't see what we really looked like!
Halloween has obviously been a very important holiday for us since

We were Batman and Poison Ivy in 2012

and Ariel and Captain Morgan in 2013.

So thats the start of our story, and what an amazing story we have yet to tell! The next time James will be chatting about the magical engagement and then it's on to the prep for the big day!
If you have any ideas on what we should write about, leave a message in the comments!

Exciting times ahead!
Catherine
